Just a short train ride from Haneda Airport lies Kamata(蒲田), a warm, down-to-earth “shitamachi” neighborhood with some 1,200 bars and restaurants.

Its retro alleyways are packed with family-run izakayas, yakitori joints, and standing bars. Still off the radar of most tourists, Kamata is the perfect place to experience “everyday Tokyo” — a night out just the way locals do it.

GOOD TO KNOW

・Nijikai
Nijikai means “second party.” In Japan, when a night out is going well, it will often carry on to a second bar — and sometimes another after that. Kamata’s dense alleys are made for bar-hopping.

・Otoshi
Otoshi is a small starter served automatically with your first drink. It isn’t free — a few hundred yen — so think of it as a table charge that comes with a snack.

・Kanpai
Kanpai is the Japanese “cheers!” Wait until everyone has a glass, raise yours together, and clink. Locals often start with a beer: “Toriaezu nama!” (“Beer first!”)
